Charollais — The Easy Lambing Prime Lamb Sire
The obvious wedge shape of the Charollais enables lambs to slip out easily and lambs are quick to find their feet and suckle. As the meat in the Charollais carcass is found in the loin and the hind quarter the fantastic carcass shape does not cause problems at lambing.
This season to date over 200 Charollais cross maidens have lambed at Danengate to Charollais rams with less 1% ewes needing lambing assistance.
Charollais excel in New Zealand
Lincoln University crossed Charollais over Coopworth last year and were very pleased with the results. The Charollais x Coopworth lambs had an average birth weight of 5.5 kgs and were 21% heavier than pure Coopworth at slaughter. Viascan revealed the Charollais cross added considerable meat to the leg and loin yield. CT scanning revealed that the Charollais x Coopworth carcasses also had more meat, less fat and less bone than the pure Coopworth carcasses. Nigel Jay, Project Co-ordinator, Lincoln University said "The signs at this stage are positive and we are impressed with how the first cross Charollais has performed."
Breed your own replacements
The Charollais is one of the most prolific terminal sires in the western world. The Charollais x ewe is prolific, clean on the points, very often a very bare breech, a great carcass and looks so far to have great maternal instincts. Use a Charollais ram and retain your own replacements. The Charollais x wether portion are ideal prime lamb. Colin and son Anthony have just finished lambing 250 Charollais x ewes and the experience so far is good, the ewes have been prolific and good mothers.
