Dam line Sire
The Ideal Dam Line Sire
An important criteria for any ewe is that she is capable of weaning her body weight in lambs each year. In order to achieve this she must be prolific, easy lambing, have strong maternal instincts and produce plenty of milk. Our experience to date with over 250 Charollais cross ewes has been that many are well on their way to achieving this.
Prolific mothers
Charollais are quite prolific with pure bred ewes lambing at 180 – 190%. The Charollais cross ewe will inherit 50% of the Charollais prolificacy.
Good maternal instincts
Our experience to date with Charollais cross ewes has been that they have a strong maternal instinct.
Bare Breech
The majority have a wide bare breech which assists in reducing fly strike problems. Both our pure Charollais and Charollais cross ewes suffered very little fly strike in the fly wave of February 2011.
Robust and vigorous lambs at birth
Lambs are straight up on their feet, bleating and suckling. The trouble-free birth ensures they are not stressed and the nature of the breed means they ‘get up and go’.
Clean on the points
Charollais are clean in the head and points meaning less grass seed problems.
Long carcass with great loin and hindquarter.
It helps if the ewe also has a better than ordinary carcass. The Charollais cross ewe has a superior carcass to many other first cross ewes.
